The Problem

Hosted headless CMS platforms charge by seat, by environment, by API call and by gigabyte of bandwidth, and your content, schemas and availability live on someone else's infrastructure. Leaving means rewriting every client, integration and editing workflow built against their API.

Freehold removes that lock-in from the other side. It speaks the same wire protocols, so the software you already run keeps working while the backend moves to infrastructure you control.

What It Is

Freehold is a drop-in, wire-compatible replacement for four headless CMS backends behind one control plane: Sanity (including GROQ queries, realtime listen, drafts and publishing, history, and Content Releases), Contentful (Delivery, GraphQL and Management APIs), Storyblok (CDN v2 and MAPI v1) and Contentstack (CDA v3 and CMA v3).

Every wire shape was checked against real, unmodified client software and captured traffic rather than public documentation alone. An unmodified Sanity Studio creates, edits and publishes documents against it, and the published compatibility report lists every verified surface and every known gap.

Key Features

Four dialects, one control plane

Organizations, projects, users and API tokens are managed once and route to whichever engine a project uses.

Your infrastructure

Runs on your Kubernetes cluster or servers with a Helm chart and Docker images, backed by PostgreSQL. Your content never leaves your estate.

Migrate from an export

Import a Contentful, Storyblok or Contentstack export through the front door and keep your existing client code with a configuration change.

Per-project tenancy

Tenant isolation is decided in front of every engine. Run test and production, or separate brands, as separate projects with their own keys and quotas.

Usage you can see

Per-project usage metering and quotas, an operator console, and a customer console where teams manage their own API keys.

No phone-home

No license keys, activation checks or usage callbacks. What you install keeps running.

Licensing

Freehold is licensed in perpetuity as compiled software: container images, binaries and the deployment chart, for use on your own infrastructure with no limit on seats, projects, datasets or traffic. Source code remains proprietary and is not part of the license. Updates are available on renewal, and the version you have keeps working whether or not you renew.

Enterprise and regulated deployments can add migration assistance and a conformance check of your content model before you commit.
